This deliverable from the EUScreen project focuses on access to audiovisual heritage in general and specifically, access in an educational setting. Chapter one briefly reviews EUScreen’s user groups and their needs; describes the digital life cycle processes of relevance to the project: creating (in this context, current digitization efforts underway); metadata management (descriptive and technical); and digital rights management. Chapter two sketches the trends in online access (primarily in Europe): increasing internet access and use; increased use of material online in educational and research domains; and trends in paying for online content. Chapter three discusses business models and the added value of online audiovisual collections: the Osterwalder and Pigneur model; the need for audiovisual archives to create a value proposition (including the EUScreen strategy); and various possible revenue strategies with real world examples. Part Two of the report focuses on the use of online audiovisual content in the educational domain. Chapter four describes E-Learning: its increased presence in the educational domain, types of platforms and potential models for analyzing such platforms. Chapter five describes how the EUScreen platform intends to create value for educational platforms. It concludes with a SWOT analysis (strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats) of the EUScreen platform in the educational domain.
This report is of particular interest to those researching audiovisual online platforms for use in the educational domain and was written as input to the EUScreen project’s webportal development. The chapters on business models and value propositions as well as the one on analyzing online educational platforms are quite detailed.
